UCL Talk: Helping to inspire a new generation of cosmetic scientists

We were honoured to be invited to talk at University College London about our favourite topic - cosmetic science!

The talk was for UCL’s Chemical and Physical Society, sponsored by the Society of Chemical Industry.

In a one hour whistle-stop tour of cosmetic science, we briefly introduced the concept of formulation chemistry and discussed the key ingredients and science behind shampoos, moisturisers and lipsticks.

“At first glance, the cosmetics industry is filled with alluring adverts that seemingly promise to reduce wrinkles, brighten skin complexion and generally improve on appearance. Can cosmetic brands actually deliver on these claims and if so, how do their products work and how are they created?

This talk will focus on how formulation science concepts such as surfactants, colloids and crystallisation can be used to create safe and effective products such as shampoos, moisturisers, and lipsticks. Some successful formulations will be demonstrated, there will be examples of when and how formulations can go wrong in the lab (formulating cosmetics isn’t as trivial as it may first seem!), and a glimpse into some of the latest cosmetic science research that could affect the future of cosmetic products.”
